UX and CRM Lead Bettor Retention Ahead of Bonuses

UX and CRM Lead Bettor Retention Ahead of Bonuses
Share:

Product Experience Shapes Choice

Optimove’s survey found that 64% of NFL bettors used two or more bookmakers during the season, and 16% used three or more. That level of switching makes product quality a direct retention lever, not a secondary feature.

When bettors choose a bookmaker, app usability leads at 59%. Easy withdrawals follow at 43%, while bonuses and promotions rank at 31%. Personalisation stands at 28%. For operators, the message is clear: promotions cannot offset a weak product journey.

Why Players Leave

The strongest churn trigger is an inconvenient site or app, cited by 47% of respondents. A lack of promotions comes next at 36%. The same share said excessive or irrelevant messages could push them away, while 33% pointed to generic offers.

This creates a clear operating challenge. Players want promotions, but they reject poor delivery. Volume alone does not improve engagement. Operators need offers that match player interest, arrive at the right moment, and avoid repetitive messaging.

The Personalisation Gap

A striking 78% of respondents said the website or app reflects their preferences. Yet only 7% described all opened marketing messages as relevant. For 48%, fewer than half of those messages felt relevant.

That gap matters because platform personalisation and CRM personalisation are not the same thing. A bettor may see useful content in the app, but still receive poorly timed emails or push alerts. CRM teams should test whether behavioural data actually informs message content, timing, and channel choice.

Channels and Content That Get Attention

Push notifications are the preferred channel for 53% of respondents. Email, SMS, and social media each scored 36%. This points to a broad channel mix, with mobile messaging leading because it reaches players close to the betting moment.

Bettors are most likely to open messages containing bonuses and special offers, at 48%. Relevance and personalisation drive 41%, while updates about a favourite team attract 36%. Another 47% want more promotions linked to bets or matches they previously viewed, which shows clear demand for behaviour-led recommendations.

What Operators Should Prioritise

Operators should treat app usability and withdrawals as core commercial functions. A smooth cashier and clear interface reduce friction, improve trust, and make it harder for competing brands to win share of wallet.

CRM teams should segment audiences by behaviour and sporting interest, not just by deposit history. Message success should be measured beyond opens, with attention on click-through, betting activity, repeat play, and churn reduction. Relevant communication is what turns personalisation into measurable retention.
