Poorly Timed In-App Messages Damage Retention, Handbox Founder Says

Why In-App Messaging Often Backfires
Uladzimir Andryienka, Founder at Handbox, argues that many operators treat in-app messaging as another promotional blast channel. The result is friction inside the product itself. When a player is already engaged in slots or live betting, an overlay promotion can break concentration and create immediate irritation.
That matters because acquisition costs remain high across iGaming. Losing a recently acquired player through poor message timing is not a minor CRM issue. It is a direct hit to retention, lifetime value and marketing efficiency.
The Main Retention Risks
Andryienka highlights three common failure points. First, promotional messages appear in the middle of an active session. Second, the offer does not match the player’s current behaviour. Third, message frequency is set by time-based triggers rather than live session activity.
Each mistake reflects the same operational problem: the operator prioritises campaign delivery over user state. A deposit prompt during live betting, or a new slot suggestion after a losing streak, feels random rather than relevant. Players do not read that as personalisation. They read it as noise.
What Better Timing Looks Like
The stronger model is session-stage messaging. Instead of segmenting only by static profile data, operators can identify points when the player is more open to communication. These moments include app entry before play begins, a pause after a long session, immediately after a deposit, or the point when a player is ending a session or making a withdrawal.
This approach is more contextual than inserting a first name or favourite game title. Real personalisation depends on what the player is doing right now. In practice, that means CRM, product and analytics teams need shared event signals, not isolated campaign rules.
Why Operators Should Care
For operators, the opportunity is clear. In-app messaging can become a high-conversion channel because the user is already inside the product and engaged. The commercial upside comes from precision, not volume.
Suppliers and platform teams also have a role. Trigger logic, frequency caps and behavioural event tracking need to be built into the messaging stack. Operators that optimise those controls can protect retention while still driving deposits, cross-sell and reactivation at the right moment.
