AI Content Fatigue Hits Affiliate Media Engagement

Audience Fatigue Reaches a Breaking Point
Speaking at BROCONF-7, Traffic Cardinal editor-in-chief Max Ognenny argued that affiliate media has trained readers to ignore it. The issue is not advertising alone. It is the spread of repetitive, interchangeable content that looks promotional from the first line and offers little original value.
According to Ognenny, the market shifted when brands realised media could shape opinion as well as drive traffic. Sponsored posts, reviews and native articles increased sharply. Over time, many readers stopped seeing affiliate media as editorial products and started treating it as a paid distribution channel.
Why AI Content Is Triggering Backlash
Ognenny said readers are not only tired of AI-written copy. They are reacting against the clumsy way it is being deployed. In his view, audience frustration now extends to any interaction that appears automated, even when a real person is involved.
He cited a case where a potential advertiser asked for pricing, then abruptly became hostile and demanded a human representative. The irony was that the conversation was already with the editor-in-chief. That response shows how quickly trust can erode when the market becomes saturated with formulaic messaging.
Cheap Production, Weak Returns
The strongest commercial point from the session was simple. Faster content production has not translated into stronger performance. AI tools can generate articles in seconds at minimal cost, yet Ognenny said many publishers and advertisers are not seeing matching growth in clicks or registrations.
That matters for operators and affiliates because content efficiency is no longer just about output volume. If every article uses the same angles, calls to action and structure, users tune out. Lower production costs then mask a bigger problem: declining attention and weaker conversion quality.
What This Means for iGaming Media
Ognenny's core argument was that sameness is the real threat. Readers can tolerate advertising when the surrounding material feels useful, distinctive and relevant. They disengage when every article sounds identical, whether a human or a machine wrote it.
For affiliate media, this is a warning to rebuild editorial identity. For operators, it is a reminder that media buying without content quality wastes budget. The immediate opportunity lies in sharper briefs, clearer audience targeting and stronger editorial standards that give readers a reason to stay with text instead of scrolling past it.
