Can Casino Players Thrive Without Homepage Banners?

In the world of online casinos, banners are a ubiquitous feature, but their true value is under scrutiny. A recent A/B test discovered that while players rarely clicked on homepage banners, the welcome bonus banner remained a consistent draw, with 45% of users registering via it after dismissing the registration modal.

The Banner Debate

Removing non-essential banners was proposed to elevate game content on the homepage and conserve graphic design resources. This sparked debate, as banners are thought to visually showcase site events and contribute to the visual identity of the platform.

The Experiment

Players were given the option to disable banners through a toggle switch on the site's top panel. Initially tested with Diamond-tier VIPs, 82% chose to hide banners, subsequently accelerating their gameplay by 1.5 seconds. The feature was expanded to users with at least three deposits, with 64% opting out, and finally to all users. Among new users with zero to three deposits, only 11% hid banners, though opt-outs rose after the fourth deposit.

Insights and Outcomes

The experiment revealed a dichotomy: VIP players frequently disabled banners, yet there was no significant change in gaming or revenue metrics. New users favoured banners for navigation, suggesting they play a role in user retention by showcasing ongoing activities. Despite the split opinions, the team recognised visiting competitors might find banners visually appealing, contributing to user retention.
