The abrupt ban on sports betting in Ethiopia has sent shockwaves through the market, which was small yet expanding. The Ethiopian gambling regulator has revoked the licences of all entities engaging in sports betting, enforcing a nationwide halt from December 15, 2025. The Ethiopian Lottery Service announced the decision following a comprehensive investigation. Dashbet, a leading local operator, was among those affected, having had a significant user share. Despite the impact, Ethiopia’s iGaming market remained relatively small, with estimated revenues of $46.5 million in the past year, ranking 87th globally.
