Spain's iGaming Market: December's Top Brands and Regulatory Changes

The Market Landscape: Brand Rankings

The Spanish iGaming market has experienced significant activity over the past month, with approximately 2.3 million queries for the top-20 brands. Leading the pack is Bet365, which dominates the brand search rankings. Sportium follows in second place, with Bwin securing the third position. According to Ahrefs, while Bet365 is a major player, its share in Spain's iGaming sector remains less than 1%.

Regulatory Environment: Evolving Policies

The Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) oversees Spain's gambling regulation under the national gambling regulation law (13/2001). Autonomous regions have the leeway to implement their own policies to safeguard vulnerable groups. A significant regulatory development is the Safe Gambling Program 2026–2030, designed to introduce phased strategies to improve market oversight. The DGOJ is actively addressing illegal operators through domain blocks and hefty fines. In 2024 alone, fines reached €140 million, with Q1 2025 recording about €75 million in fines.

Marketing and Advertising: New Dynamics

Previously stringent marketing restrictions on online casinos have been partially relaxed by the Supreme Court, sparking a resurgence in advertising activities. However, new requirements are being developed, mandating clear warnings about gambling addiction risks in all marketing materials.

Market Growth: Impact of Policy Changes

The Spanish Ministry of Consumer Affairs reports a 20% increase in the number of players in 2024, attributed in part to a €200 million marketing spend following the easing of advertising laws and the return of welcome bonuses. While the Ministry proposes banning welcome bonuses again to curb online casino interest, it remains to be seen if this will come into effect.
